The Paperwork
Don't Stress - I'll guide you step by step!

I'll guide you step by step through the paperwork.
The first thing you need to do is get your documents sorted,
I will need to see your birth certificate and drivers licence or your passport. If either of you have been previously married, I will also need to see evidence of finalisation of that marriage (divorce or death certificate if applicable).

The next thing you need to do is call me. I'll guide you step by step to complete the legally required documentation in the necessary time frames. If you're a bit like me and want to understand the process I've outlined it below, otherwise you've done what you need to do.

The Documents

There are five documents in total. We'll do two of these prior to your ceremony, a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) and a Declaration of no Impediment to Marriage. Then during your ceremony you'll sign three documents, your two witnesses will also sign these.

Before your ceremony

There are two documents that we will complete before your wedding ceremony. The first one is  a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).

If you like, we can complete the NOIM at our first meeting, I can provide you with the form and we can do it together or you can download it from the above link and bring it with you to our meeting.

In order for me to witness your NOIM I will need to sight your birth certificate and drivers licence or your passport. If either of you have been previously married I will also need to sight evidence of finalisation of that marriage (divorce or death certificate if applicable). Your NOIM must be lodged with me at least one month prior to your ceremony taking place and it is valid for 18 months.

If your partner is migrating to Australia and applying for a Prospective Marriage Visa after you lodge your NOIM with me and pay a $200 non-refundable booking/administration fee for your ceremony, I'll issue you with a letter which confirms that you are arranging your wedding ceremony. You may require this for the Visa application.

Prior to your ceremony you will also need to complete a Declaration of no Impediment to Marriage, I'll provide you with this form and will witness it after you complete it. I usually arrange for us to meet a day or so prior to your wedding, we do a rehearsal and also complete this document.

During your ceremony

During your ceremony you will sign 3 documents
  • Official Certificate Of Marriage
  • The Marriage Register
  • Presentation Marriage Certificate
Two witnesses over the age of 18 are also required to sign these documents
At the completion of your ceremony you will receive the Presentation Marriage Certificate, I will also give you a copy of your ceremony as a keepsake.

After your ceremony

Following your ceremony I'll lodge the NOIM, Declaration of no Impediment to Marriage and the Official Certificate of Marriage with the relevant Births, Deaths and Marriages Office. I do this on the next business day following your ceremony.

Please note that an Official Certified copy of your Marriage Certificate is required for any legal purposes, for example changing your passport or drivers license. If you are getting married in Tasmania I can order this for you from Tasmanian Government Births Deaths & Marriages (TAS BDM) when I lodge your documents. My fee for this is $60.00 which covers the charge of $56.55 from TAS BDM and a small administration fee.

Otherwise you will need to apply to the relevant Births, Deaths and Marriages Office (BDM) for this document at a later date.
